Which Pokémon game is best for a classic campaign experience?

-

I’ve got a Switch and a laptop for emulators. I played Pokémon Legends Arceus a couple of years back but found it to be a grind with all the fetch quests and minimal storytelling. I’m also not too keen on Pokémon Go since it feels like a never-ending commitment with no real goals. I’m looking for a game with a straightforward campaign where I can beat gym leaders, catch some Pokémon to build a solid team without excessive training, and enjoy a good storyline. I know Gen I well but am open to exploring new Pokémon, although I prefer the classic ones. Any suggestions?

I’d recommend Pokémon Emerald or Platinum to start. Both have a solid balance of story and gameplay without the grindiness you experienced in Arceus. You’ll find the classic feel while enjoying straightforward mechanics. Plus, you can build a great team without too much hassle.

HeartGold and SoulSilver are two of my all-time favorites. They have a great story and really streamline the leveling system, making it easier to build your team. Plus, they capture that classic feel and nostalgia!

Honestly, you might want to check out some ROM hacks if you’re using emulators! There are some really cool ones out there that can give you a fresh take on the classic Pokémon gameplay without the grind.

Sword and Shield are also excellent choices. They focus heavily on gym battles and have built-in experience candy to help you level up quickly without much effort. Also, they have some Gen 1 Pokémon you might like.

If you want something a bit more relaxed, Pokémon X and Y are fantastic because they remove a lot of the grinding with the experience share system. Also, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire allow you to play with Gen 3 Pokémon and offer easy leveling, so you won’t find yourself stuck for long.
