I’m curious to hear what Pokémon fans think about designs that seem like they could fit better in a different generation or region. For example, I feel Cyclizar has a Gen 3 vibe because of its eye shape and body style. I got inspired after seeing someone say Nymble looks like a Gen 1 Pokémon, which I don’t totally agree with, but it’s an interesting take. To be clear, I’m not asking about Pokémon you confuse for other regions, but rather which ones have artistic designs that seem like they’d fit better somewhere else.

Some Pokémon just scream a different generation to me. Like Hitmonlee feels more Gen 3 with its odd, almost alien body shape and simple eyes, way less like the classic human fighters in Gen 1. Gligar looks like it could be Gen 1 with its triangular eyes and purple tone. Stunfisk somehow gives off Gen 1 vibes too, mainly because of its expression. Polteageist seems like it would fit perfectly in Gen 4’s more unique and spooky lineup. And I swear Pawmi, Pawmo, and Pawmot feel so Gen 1 with their progressively bigger but basically simple evolution style and basic eyes.
I always thought the Wattrel line had that Gen 3 feel—like a really stylized, simple bird Pokémon similar to what appeared in Hoenn. The eye shapes and the overall design remind me a lot of Taillow and other Hoenn birds.
I’m sticking to my theory that Alomomola and Bouffalant could have been Gen 4 evolutions. Like, Alomomola feels like it should evolve from Luvdisc because of its shape and vibe, and Bouffalant reminds me a bit of Tauros or a split evolution with it.
Yeah, lots of folks thought Alomomola would be Luvdisc’s evolution when its design first dropped. Personally, I also think Gorebyss might have originally been considered an evolution for Luvdisc before they made it a split evolution of Clamperl. And get this — I expected Emolga to evolve from Pachirisu since an electric squirrel turning into an electric flying squirrel just makes perfect sense to me. Bouffalant’s connection to Tauros is less clear, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some creative link somewhere.
Kecleon, even though it’s from Hoenn, feels like it fits better in Johto with the weird one-stage Pokémon like Girafarig or Shuckle. It has that strange vibe that’s typical of some Johto designs.
I always mix up Indeedee’s generation. I think because it reminds me so much of Meowstic and Audino, I sometimes forget it’s Gen 8 and not Gen 6. That mix-up happens way more often than it should!
LOL same here, it’s like the psychic vibes blur the generation lines in my head.
Totally agree! It’s subtle but Wattrel and its evolutions definitely have that laid-back Hoenn vibe compared to the more detailed Gen 7 and 8 bird designs.
