Which Neogeo Games Should I Try to Experience Its Unique Appeal?

-

I’ve often heard about the Neogeo console, but rarely do I hear someone mention specific standout games for it. If I want to understand what makes the Neogeo special, which ROMs or games should I check out? I’m open to Neogeo CD recommendations as well, so feel free to suggest the best titles that capture the platform’s charm.

Besides the usual Metal Slug and KoF, give Street Hoop a try. It’s a really fun 3-on-3 basketball game that’s a bit different from what you might expect on the platform. Honestly, I say just grab the full ROM set because Neogeo doesn’t really have any bad games, so you can explore and find your favorites along the way.

Totally agree! It seems like SNK mostly put out solid stuff, so I guess diving into the whole collection makes sense.

Burning Fight may feel like a Final Fight clone, but it’s got its own charm and is a blast to play! Worth checking out if you like side-scrolling beat ‘em ups.

BladeStormZ -

If you’re into SNK fighters, Last Blade 2 is where it’s at. I recently got into it and it’s probably my favorite SNK fighting game now. It has deep mechanics but is super fun once you get the hang of it.

ShooterKing99 -

For shooters, Neogeo has some tough but rewarding games. Last Resort and Pulstar are classic shoot ‘em ups, with Pulstar being particularly challenging. And for fighting fans, games like Samurai Shodown 2, King of Fighters 98, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 are definitely where it’s at.

You can’t go wrong starting with Metal Slug—it’s iconic. Also, the SNK fighting games like King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown are fantastic. Don’t overlook Windjammers and Shock Troopers either; they’ve got great arcade vibes and are super fun.

HiddenGemHunter -

Don’t forget Nightmare in the Dark! It’s a bit underrated but really fun and unique – definitely worth a look if you want something different on Neogeo.

If I had a 4-slot MVS setup, my perfect lineup would be Neo Turf Masters, Blazing Star, KoF 95, and Metal Slug. That combo nails arcade fun in different genres and really shows off Neogeo’s range.
