I’m a casual player with limited time to devote to this game, usually only a couple hours a week. I don’t expect to reach the top tier tanks like T9 or T10 anytime soon, so I’m looking for enjoyable mid-tier vehicles around T6 to T8 that can dish out big damage. I’ve tried several lines — mainly heavies and tank destroyers — that seemed fun because of their punch and durability. I currently have some progress to T7 or T8 on three lines but want fresh recommendations based on my experience.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
– IS line: I did well up to KV-1, but the KV-1S was frustrating. I used free XP to get to the IS, which feels mediocre and often requires very specific situations to perform.
– SU-152: This was OK coming off the KV-2, but I find it relies heavily on gold ammo for decent damage, which means using my limited HP for sometimes inconsistent results.
– Rhm. Borsig: This line worked out the best so far. Although the stock gun is a bit of a track magnet, it feels solid. I’m just ready to explore other playstyles beyond sniping.
I’ve heard the Japanese TDs might have good guns, armor, and mobility, and that American heavies could be more approachable. I’d love any advice or tanks you think fit a casual player who enjoys hitting hard without grinding endlessly for the very top tiers.

The Italian Minotauro line of TDs is a fantastic pick for newer players wanting to get into tank destroyers that aren’t just long-range snipers. These tanks all have great turret armor and play similarly from Tier 7 and up, focusing on hull-down and ridgeline combat. They also have autoloader-style burst damage which is super fun and lets you brawl alongside heavies rather than just lurking from the back. It’s a forgiving line that’s good for learning aggressive TD playstyles.
If you want some tank info that’s easy to digest, check out Skill4ltu’s ratings. It’s a pretty user-friendly site where each tank gets community and personal scores. Not all the ratings will fit your style, but it’s a solid way to narrow down choices without getting lost in stats. Also, the O-I is a neat Japanese heavy that can do well if you’re not up-tiered too badly. Keep in mind it plays differently than the usual mediums and heavies though.
I’ve personally had good results with the T29 and T32 American heavies if you want straightforward, durable tanks that can soak damage and hit hard. Just a heads up though, most tech tree tanks below Tier 9 aren’t going to feel amazing if you want to climb the ranks, but for casual play and learning, they do the job well. The Japanese TDs you mentioned are okay but are getting nerfed lately, so they might not feel as strong as before.
Thanks for the heads up on the Japanese TDs! I guess I’ll look more closely at the American heavies then.
American heavies like the M6 (Tier 6), T29 (Tier 7), and T32 (Tier 8) are pretty reliable choices if you want solid armor and decent damage without a steep learning curve. They’re great for mid-tier play and forgiving enough for casual sessions. If you’re mainly after that heavy tank feel with room to improve, the T29 especially has a nice balance of armor and firepower.
I’ll give Skill4ltu a look. Always good to have some extra data to help pick tanks that fit my style.
