Hey everyone! I’m still pretty new to Guild Wars 2 and have been really enjoying playing the Reaper through Path of Fire (PoF) and Heart of Thorns (HoT). Since I don’t get to play a ton, I’m trying to figure out which expansion would give me the most value if I buy just one next. I’ve heard that the End of Dragons (EoD) has some cool new elite specs and other content, but the Secrets of the Obscure (SotO) expansion seems to offer easier ways to get the Skyscale mount and some open world legendary armor grind that sounds fun. What do you think? Is SotO the most logical next step or would another expansion be better for a newer player like me? Thanks a ton!

I recently started playing the Jormag’s Wrath (JW) expansion, so I can’t comment on everything yet, but from what I see, SotO has more content available right now since JW is still developing its story and content patches. JW continues the story after SotO and also unlocks the Spear weapon for all your characters, while SotO gives you the weapon training and the Skyscale mount. Plus, if you’re interested in the Warclaw mount from JW, you can actually unlock it through World vs World gameplay even without owning JW, so that’s a neat bonus you can get for free.
SotO is definitely a solid pick for a newer player looking for long-term content. Besides the easier Skyscale mount you mentioned, it also offers open world legendary armor which is a huge amount of content to grind and enjoy over time. Plus, the Story of the Obscure missions introduce weapon mastery, letting you use new weapons like greatswords and torches with your Reaper or other specs, which is a nice gameplay boost without needing to buy other expansions.
Thanks for all the input! So it sounds like following the story order might be a good approach — like finishing LW4 (Secrets of the Obscure), then JW, with EoD somewhere in there for elite specs and maps? Also, I’m really interested in the homesteads feature mentioned with JW for decorating and personal space, so that might sway me later on too.
If you haven’t got End of Dragons yet, I’d say it’s actually the best next step. It adds your last missing elite specs, has four new maps that are really fun to explore, and even a unique mount—a turtle, which is one of only two player mounts in the game! Plus, the story wraps up the dragon arc with the water dragon storyline, which is a nice closure if you like that lore. It also has plenty of activities like strikes, achievements, and exploration that keep you busy.
Yeah, following the story progression is a solid way to get the most from each expansion and understand the lore as it unfolds. Plus, each one brings its own cool gameplay features so you’ll keep things fresh.
