Hey everyone! I’m currently deciding between upgrading my GPU from a 3050 to either an RTX 4060 Ti or an AMD RX 7700 XT. The 7700 XT is about $85 more expensive than the 4060 Ti ($625 vs $540). I don’t plan on using Ray Tracing much, so I’m wondering if it’s worth spending extra on the AMD card. Also, this would be my first time using an AMD GPU, so any insights on how it performs or what to expect would be helpful!

I’d wait if you can hold off a bit. Rumors about an RTX 4060 Ti 16GB variant (sometimes called the 9060 Ti) are floating around, which might bring better VRAM and performance for a similar price. If you can wait a little, it could be worth it.
Honestly, if you want to save some cash and don’t mind slightly lower performance, the RTX 4060 Ti is still a decent card and would serve well if the $85 matters to you. Since RT isn’t a priority for you, the price/performance ratio leans towards the 7700 XT but the 4060 Ti isn’t a bad fallback if budget is tighter.
If pure performance is what you’re after, the RX 7700 XT tends to outperform the RTX 4060 Ti by roughly 10% on average. So if you want to get the most bang for your buck and stick to AMD, it’s a solid choice. Especially since you’re not interested in Ray Tracing, which Nvidia usually shines at, the 7700 XT could be a better fit for you.
Just a heads up, some people suggest considering the RX 9070 XT or even used RTX 4070 or 4070 Super cards if you want better value in the longer term. The RX 9070 XT usually has more VRAM and around 30% better speed, but prices vary depending on your location. Since that might be too pricey for you, the 7700 XT is still a pretty good pick.
Yeah, the 9070 XT is pretty expensive here (around $1200), so it’s out of reach. I’ll probably go with the 7700 XT then.
Yeah, my goal is to have a solid card that’ll last a while without issues, so spending a bit extra might be worth it for that peace of mind.
