I’ve been thinking about games that are simple to pick up but incredibly difficult to master. For instance, Super Smash Bros. is pretty easy to learn the basics, but the difference in skill levels between casual players and the pros is enormous. I’m decent when playing with friends, but when I go online, I often get crushed. What other games have this kind of accessibility and steep skill curve?

Most rhythm games fit this bill too. You can start playing and feel good about your skills, but watching the top players is a humbling experience. I could barely keep my combo while they nail everything perfectly!
For real! It feels like a completely different game at the top levels.
Tetris is legendary too! Super fun and easy to get into but the high-level play is a complete spectacle. Those speedrunners are on another level, chaining combos like it’s nothing!
A hundred percent! I occasionally play Tetris 99, and the competition is fierce.
Yeah, you realize there’s so much depth once you hit the higher tiers.
Rocket League is another one! You think it’s just driving a car to hit a ball, but those pro players make it look like magic with insane aerial tricks. It’s like they fly!
And don’t get me started on setups! The strategy is mind-blowing.
Exactly! I can barely stay on the ground without crashing. Top players are in a league of their own.
Old School RuneScape has that easy-to-learn, hard-to-master vibe too. You start simple, but once you get into the complexities of skills and combat, it’s like a whole new game!
Definitely! The deeper you go, the more you realize how much strategy there is.
And the mechanics like tick manipulation? That’s a whole different game from just fishing!
Chess is a classic example. It’s pretty easy to learn the rules, but mastering the game can take a lifetime. The depth of strategy involved is insane! It’s like each match is a new battlefield of wits.
Totally! Even if you grasp the basics, those top players think ten moves ahead. It’s wild!
Yeah, and Go is even simpler to learn but has a much higher complexity ceiling.
Right? I used to crush Guitar Hero on expert, but even that required star power to finish songs.
