I’m heading off on a work trip next week and I’m trying to decide between bringing Persona 5 Royal (P5R) or Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (XC3) for my Nintendo Switch. I’ve enjoyed the previous Xenoblade games and loved Persona 3. Since I’ll be gaming mostly in handheld mode, I’m curious if there’s a big difference in performance between the two. I’ve heard they’re both great games. At home, I have a PS5 Pro if P5R is better there. I’ve recently completed EX33, FF16, and FF7R, and I’m looking forward to checking out Metaphor when it goes on sale. I prefer darker stories and want to know which game is easier to jump into while on the go.

I’ve played both in handheld mode for a ton of hours, and while XC3 has some minor frame drops (around 3-5 fps at worst), it’s not too noticeable early on. P5R runs smoothly, but it does have some aliasing issues on the Switch. If you’re into darker themes, XC3 explores war and humanity’s flaws, while P5R has its own take on societal issues but feels a bit lighter overall.
I’d say Xenoblade Chronicles 3. While Persona 5 has some mature elements, it loses focus later on, making it more of an escapist kind of game. XC3 stays true to its darker tone and is much more consistent throughout.
Exactly! XC3 tackles themes in a way that P5 can only pretend to, so if you’re looking for more depth, XC3 is the way to go.
Totally agree! The first palace in P5 is cool, but it kind of veers into a high school fantasy while losing its deeper themes as you progress.
I genuinely think both are excellent. However, XC3 has stronger writing and character development, while P5R can sometimes feel a little juvenile in its dialogue.
If I had to choose, I’d definitely say go for Xenoblade 3. It has a somber atmosphere throughout which seems to match what you’re looking for. While P5R is amazing, I think it’s best appreciated on PS4 due to some limitations in the Switch version.
You’re right about P5R; that epilepsy filter can be distracting! XC3 definitely has the darker vibe you’re looking for.
Both games are awesome; you really can’t mess up your choice here!
I’d personally go with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It’s my all-time favorite game! But honestly, you can’t go wrong with either one.
You know, you really can’t go wrong with either! XC3 just handles its darker themes a bit better, in my opinion.
Thanks for the insight! I might lean towards XC3 first, especially since I’d like to avoid Persona fatigue with Metaphor coming up.
