Which Final Fantasy Games Have You Played? What Were Your First and Favorite?

-

Hey everyone! I just finished playing Final Fantasy IV for the second time and realized I’ve gone through quite a few games in the series by now—II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and IX. I started wondering what my actual first Final Fantasy game was—maybe FFVI or V on GBA? Can’t quite remember! It made me curious about your experiences with the series. Which Final Fantasy was your first, and which one do you consider your favorite? For me, VI takes the top spot, with IX and VII close behind. Would love to hear your stories!

I’m a bit of an old schooler, got into FF8 first via a demo disc at a friend’s place, and it’s been my favorite ever since. Also a massive fan of X and 9. Currently enjoying Rebirth as well.

SpriteSorcerer -

I played FF8, 9, 10, 10-2, and 12 in order. The PS2 was my last console. Just recently played FF10 again on my laptop and loving it, making me want to explore the other entries I missed.

QuestWhisperer -

Played most main titles up to 11, and some others here and there. First I played was FF4 and my favorite has to be FF8. Really got into its story and gameplay.

ArcanePixie -

Played all the mainline Final Fantasy titles. My very first was FF2, and my favorite has got to be FF8. Also really like the villains in XIII and XVI, especially Caius and Barnabas.

PixelRogue57 -

8 is definitely one I want to play next. I know it’s not as hyped as 7 or 9, but that late PS1 era of Final Fantasy has a special vibe I really enjoy.

CelesteFury -

First FF was Final Fantasy XIV back in 2014, and I’ve never stopped playing since! I also played almost all the numbered games afterward.

ShadowSage007 -

I’ve played every numbered mainline title multiple times, along with Tactics. My first real FF game was FF3 on DS. My top favorites are split between the GBA version of FF5 for its job system and the PS4 Remaster of FF8 for the story and complex junction system. Surprisingly, FF6 isn’t a favorite for me, even though many rave about it.

TurncoatMage -

I started with FF1 and 2 on GBA, which was a great intro to the franchise. I’d definitely recommend those for newcomers!

NovaQuest77 -

I dove into pretty much every mainline game plus spinoffs. My first Final Fantasy was XV, which is actually what got me hooked on the series despite its flaws. I’m currently saving it for last as I do my marathon through the games. My favorite though is FFVIII. It’s a bit weird and experimental, which I love. The story is kind of nuts, but that just made the experience all the more fun. I’m also super hyped for the final part of the FFVII remake series—hope it lives up to the hype!

PixelRogue57 -

I appreciate all these awesome memories and picks! Shows how diverse Final Fantasy fans’ journeys can be.

NebulaSnare -

Started playing FF7 in 2016, and fell in love. Then went back to play FF4, 3 remake, 5, 6, 10, 12 and others over virtual consoles and mobile ports. I’m still exploring the series!

RetroSprite123 -

First FF game for me was FF6, then 9 and I’ve since tried all titles below 10 and also 13. I thought 1 was kinda good, but 6 remains the gold standard in my book, while 9 was a bit overplayed so I feel meh about it now.

SteelKitten -

Played through nearly all the numbered Final Fantasies, except for the mmos and the XIII trilogy. My first was FF7 and favorite is FF10, but honestly I enjoy all of them — no FF game I’ve played hasn’t been fun.

ManaSprite -

My first Final Fantasy was actually Mystic Quest, but seeing my cousin play FF7 on the PS1 got me hooked. My dad bought me FF7 and FF8 for PC, and FF7 remains my favorite to this day.

MageJolt -

Started my FF journey with FF7 and it’s still my favorite, although FF8 ranks just behind it. I’ve finished about ten of the games and dabbled in several more.

ShadowRaven23 -

I played almost all numbered entries till FF13 and half-many spinoffs. My first was the original FF7 and it has stayed my favorite since.

GlitchVortex -

I started with FF7, and honestly, my favorite is the remake version called Rebirth, but if you don’t want to count remakes or spinoffs, then my favorites are tied between FF8 and FF9.

PixelRogue57 -

Yeah, I don’t have a next-gen or gaming PC right now, so trying out 10 through 16 has been tough for me. I’ve heard those later games really shake things up compared to the classics though. Definitely want to take the plunge eventually!

RagnarokTiger -

I’ve played practically every numbered title up to 10, including Tactics, but I couldn’t really get into XII or XIII and never finished them. Didn’t count the MMOs XI and XIV much, and I haven’t touched 15 yet. Started with FF4 (aka 2 in the US), which is still one of my favorites, but if I had to pick an all-time favorite, it’s probably FF7 or Tactics.

ChronoPixel -

Finished almost all mainline games from 1 through 10, then 12 and 13 too. Couldn’t get into 11 and 14 much since those are MMOs, and I never touched 15. I’m currently working through 16. First game I played was FF4, which is sometimes called FF2 in the West. Favorite is a tough call but usually FF7 or FF Tactics.

Pathfinder64 -

I’ve played all except XI, 14, and recently 16. My first was FF9, and my favorites have to be FF7 and FF10. I still go back and play FF10 every year — it’s one of my all-time favorite games.

WraithByte -

I was a child when I first got into Final Fantasy and played 1-11 (except 12 and 13) plus spinoffs. My absolute favorite is FF8, which I still replay often over short bursts.

PixelRogue57 -

Tactics Advance was also a huge part of my childhood, pretty sure I never actually finished it back then though.

PixelRogue57 -

Feels like our FF histories line up quite a bit!

ThunderDagger33 -

First was FFI on the NES back in the day, favorite is FF10. Played almost all mainline FF games when they released, except for the MMOs. Grown up loving this series and hoping to tackle the FF7 Remake Part 3 before too long.

EchoBlade99 -

I’ve played almost all the mainline Final Fantasy games and finished most of them. My first was the very original FF on NES, but I was super young and didn’t get it fully at the time. The games that really hooked me were FFIV and FFVI on SNES. Picking a favorite is tough, but if I include the MMOs, FF XIV takes the crown for me; without MMOs, it’s definitely FFVI.

PixelKnight42 -

I’ve gone through every mainline FF and some spinoffs too. First I played was FF4 (second one released in the US), which is my favorite on DS. If I had to pick an overall favorite though, maybe FF7 or Tactics?

VortexPixie -

Played all mainline games plus a handful of spinoffs. First Final Fantasy for me was FF4 Advance. Favorite is FF15!

ZephyrClaw -

I’ve finished basically every main single-player game except X-2, which I’m still working on. Also played some remakes and spin-offs. My first was FF7 Remake in 2020, but I got into full game marathons after playing FF15 earlier this year. Top favorites? Definitely FF12, 6, 5, 7, and 9. Also enjoyed 10, 13-2, and 4.

KnightmareX -

My first final fantasy was FF10 and it’s still my favorite. I’ve played and finished 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 15, 16, and some spin-offs like Crisis Core and Tactics Advance.
