Hey everyone! I used to play Final Fantasy XIV a lot and became completely hooked on the Black Mage gameplay there. Now I’m craving more Black Mage action, even if it means stepping outside the MMORPG style or trying something that handles it differently. Can anyone recommend Final Fantasy games or related titles where the Black Mage or similar magic-focused characters are particularly fun or memorable to play as? I’m curious about both gameplay and character/story appeal!

Vivi from Final Fantasy IX is probably the most iconic Black Mage in the series. His story is really touching, and he embodies the classic fantasy mage vibe. Gameplay-wise, he’s a straightforward magic user who can also enhance other characters’ attacks. Even if the playstyle doesn’t match FFXIV’s combo-heavy rotations exactly, Vivi’s character makes him a standout choice.
Stranger of Paradise has Black Mage as one of the playable jobs in this Souls-like Final Fantasy spin-off. You can mix Black Mage with other classes (like White Mage to become a Sage), and it’s got a unique gameplay rhythm involving building up different magic casts and cooldowns. It’s quite satisfying if you want something distinct from traditional FF games but still within the Final Fantasy universe.
I hadn’t considered Stranger of Paradise yet, but that mix of Black and White Mage sounds exactly like what I’m after. Thanks!
If you want deep job-based customization like FFXIV, Final Fantasy V is a perfect pick. It has an excellent job system where you can combine Black Mage abilities with others, like Red Mage, to pull off powerful spell combos. Plus, endgame jobs add even more flavor. Also, Final Fantasy Dimensions takes these job systems even further if you’re looking for expanded options.
I totally agree, V’s job system is where the classic job mechanics really shine. Mixing Black Mage with other jobs gives you a fun feel of customizing your magic style.
For a different flavor, try Final Fantasy Tactics or its sequels if you like strategy RPGs. Black Mage classes open up pretty early and you can gain access to powerful spells, although managing MP can be tricky. The job system lets you build some cool multi-class setups. Also, if you want more story-driven Black Mages, Final Fantasy VI’s Terra and Celes are pretty interesting (though not pure Black Mage archetypes).
Outside the Final Fantasy series, I’d suggest checking out some RPGs with cool caster gameplay like the Tales series (Vesperia in particular), Dragon’s Dogma, or even Divinity: Original Sin 2 if you’re open to something different. They don’t have the exact same Black Mage feel, but their magic systems offer flashy and impactful spells that feel really rewarding to play. Also, Outward has a unique magic system that feels ritualistic and creative, which might be a fresh take on casting magic.
Yeah, Vivi’s definitely a favorite for story and style more than complex gameplay combos, which is cool too!
