I’m trying to get my friend into the Final Fantasy franchise and want them to experience the essence of what FF has to offer. I’m considering suggesting three key games for them to play. I’m currently thinking about titles like VI, VII, and X, but I’d love to hear your suggestions. Which game should they start with, and what makes it a great introduction? It’s worth mentioning that they enjoy RPGs and appreciate a solid story.

If it were up to me, the first three would be Final Fantasy IX, X, and XII. IX is a great snapshot of the series with classic job systems and amazing characters. X dives deep into strategy and has a fantastic tale. Finally, XII gives a shoutout to modern gameplay without losing touch with its roots, showcasing the franchise’s evolution. And honestly, just getting them hooked on one will likely lead them to explore the rest!
I’d recommend one from each era: maybe IV or VI for the pixel art, VII for the PS1 nostalgia, and X for PS2/PS3 gameplay. If they like Star Wars-type stories, XII is a good middle ground, while XV or XVI is great for modern tastes. But I’d say avoid XIII until they’re fully into the series—it can be a tough ride for newcomers!
I’d throw in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Mystic Quest, and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII as unique picks! They each showcase different aspects of the franchise, though they’re a bit less mainstream. Plus, they’re pretty fun in their own ways.
LOL, great picks! But what makes those three stand out for you?
FFX is my top pick! It’s got an outstanding narrative, solid mechanics, and a ton of side quests. Just keep in mind that exploration feels a bit limited. As for the classic charm, VI is also top-tier if they enjoy that aesthetic. Both games will likely hook them!
For a classic experience, definitely recommend FFVI. It’s a brilliant representation of the pixel era with a great story. Then, FF X for a more modern twist; it really has that balance of old-school JRPG charm with engaging storytelling. Finally, FF XVI shows where the series is going, and while it’s different, it still has that epic narrative flair. Just don’t start with VII yet—it’s a rabbit hole of sequels and spinoffs!
Any reasons why those 3?
