I’m planning a magicka-centric playthrough as a pure mage, mostly sticking to robes, spells, and staffs, although I might wear some light or heavy armor and carry a backup blade. I’m going to create a custom class that focuses on several skills like Alchemy, Alteration, Destruction, Restoration, Conjuration, and Mysticism, possibly adding a blade or armor skill too. Since I’m going Breton, I’m trying to decide between the Atronach, Mage, or Apprentice birth signs. While alchemy and welkynd stones can help me overcome the downsides of the Atronach sign, it does add an extra task to my playthrough. The spell absorption is fantastic, potentially reaching 98% with the right gear, but I also noticed there aren’t many mage enemies out there. The Breton would help with the penalty from the Apprentice sign, but I’m not convinced it’s worth it. The Mage sign offers a flat bonus of +50 without any downsides. I’m currently leaning towards Atronach or Mage, and I’d love to hear any advice you have!

Definitely go with Atronach! It’s such a fun way to play if you’re okay with managing the downsides. You’ll feel like a classic D&D wizard, using your mana strategically. Plus, there are so many ways to replenish your mana, so it’s hardly a downside at all.
If you’re after the most magicka overall, I’d go with Mage. Apprentice gives you a huge boost to magicka upfront, but you’ll be vulnerable to magic until you can enchant some decent gear. Atronach is cool if you’re nostalgic for the Morrowind style, but you need to know how to handle its downsides well.
Totally agree! Atronach Breton is pretty much a classic build in Oblivion.
