I need to get some ceramic and I read that I need to obtain clay to do this. I have been doing quite a bit of exploring and I have not come across any clay yet. I am wondering if there is something I need to do or somewhere else I need to look in order to find it?

Clay is surprisingly rare considering it is quite common in the real world. Clay is found on the surface of the planets. It looks like a brown rock. Harvest it as normal and you will get clay from it. The resource blocks will also go deep into the soil, so once you find some, you should end up with a large amount of it.
