I have been playing the game for several hours and I don’t recall ever seeing a good gear showing up as a crafting component in any of the workbenches or structures I have used. Where do you get good gears from?

Good gears are advanced items to craft. You will need to use a wood shaping bench in order to craft these. It is worth building one of these benches as you will find you need more and more gears along with wheels and other crafting ingredients that work for more advanced automation in the game.
