After the huge twist in Pillars of Eternity 1 revealing that the gods are created by the Kith, I was hoping the sequel would delve deeper into explaining that process. However, PoE2 didn’t touch on it at all. Now with the release of Avowed, we’re introduced to an isolated civilization that seemingly created a god by accident, yet still no clarity on how a god like Sapadal even exists. It’s starting to get frustrating, especially since Avowed seemed like the perfect opportunity to elaborate on this mysterious process instead of just saying, ‘Here’s a god without any real explanation!’

It really ties back to the relationship between Adra and souls. The Engwithans had a process to create gods, but once animancers can replicate that method, we might finally see how it’s done—just like the Engwithans did! There’s so much potential for deeper exploration in future games.
I think the mystery will unravel once we explore the Maelstrom more. Historically, that’s where many who opposed the Engwithans lived. I’m guessing they separated their adra from other areas, and that possibly the Living Lands were a sort of testing ground. Before the Wheel, gods like Sapadal seemed to appear and fade as soul energy fluctuated. The process might be about balancing that energy to maintain a deity over time. It’s fascinating to think about how population dynamics played a role in deity creation!
Honestly, I feel like we’ve gotten a pretty thorough explanation already. The Kith created the gods when they built the Wheel, and we see how it siphons soul energy. The corpses of the titan bodies that housed the gods also suggest that there’s a lot we still don’t fully understand. We know about the inconsistencies in reincarnation before the Wheel, and how certain chaotic gods are popping up. It’s clear there’s still mystery, but it looks like gods might just come into being naturally over time!
Is there any reference that suggests Engwithans are hiding something? Your logic about Sapadal is interesting!
Definitely a lot of confusion surrounding the gods’ origins. One thing to keep in mind is that the gods’ power is dwindling because of the broken Wheel. If the Envoy frees Sapadal, we might finally get insights into how the whole closed Adra system actually creates a god! There’s some lore about how the Engwithans didn’t leave ruins in the Living Lands and there’s a mention of a tablet with multiple languages. If we could unlock those languages, it might reveal more about the ‘Godless’ and their god. Who knows what secrets are out there? Just seems like the deeper we dig, the more questions we have!
Great breakdown! I love how deep the lore goes in this series.
