I’m trying to figure out when PlayStation will add the feature to upload images from a USB drive to use as backgrounds on the PS5, similar to what the PS4 could do. I want to set a custom image from my computer, but I’m trying to find the best way to do this. Sending it through the PlayStation app is an option, but I’m worried it might reduce the image quality.

You can still work around it! Just load your image on a USB, then open it through the PS5 media app and take a screenshot. Just remember to keep your image size under 3840 pixels wide—otherwise, it won’t show up!
Honestly, it might be a long wait, if it happens at all. There’s a good chance they won’t introduce USB support for images until the next console generation.
