I’ve been hearing that it’s best not to rush through the main story, and since I don’t have a ton of time to play, I’m looking for a good point to pause and focus on side quests. I’ve already done some arena battles and a few quests in the Imperial City, but I want to make sure I’m not missing out on anything before I dive into exploration. Where would be a comfortable ‘pause point’?

Take Martin with you for a bit! He’s a great companion, can handle fights, and won’t die on you. Just avoid any Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood stuff, and you can take your time exploring. Once you’re done, you can still drop him off and resume the main quest later.
I plan to drop Martin off at Bruma and then just have fun exploring for a while. That way, you can enjoy the world without the main quest hanging over your head.
There’s usually a good moment right around the time you need to find a Daedric artifact. That’s when I usually wander off track and do my own thing.
I’d suggest you take a break after you safely deliver Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple. It’s a solid point to step back and start exploring without feeling like you’re neglecting the main storyline.
In my experience, I take a break just before I go to find Jauffre. The main story can feel a bit frantic, and taking that breather really helps you enjoy the side content.
