Hey everyone! I’m new here and totally hooked on the lore. I’ve been trying to unravel the timeline behind the Traitor Legions and how they fell to Chaos, especially during the Drop Site Massacre on Istvaan V. I get that the Word Bearers were the first to fall, followed by the Sons of Horus, but what about the others like the World Eaters, Death Guard, and Emperor’s Children? Did they all turn at once, or was there a gradual spread of Chaos influence? Also, how do the Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors fit into this timeline? I’ve read a bit, but I’m looking for clarity and maybe some good book recommendations. Thanks!

Honestly, just dive into the books. There’s so much scattered info out there—some of it even contradicts itself! The wiki is okay, but the novels really flesh out the background and give a clearer picture. Plus, it’s just way more fun reading the stories than piecing together facts from a page. But I get it, starting with the books can be overwhelming with how many exist!
Welcome to the community! So, yeah, the Word Bearers definitely led the charge when it came to embracing Chaos. They actually started spreading their influence through these things called Warrior Lodges, creating hidden factions within the legions that were more susceptible to corruption. The rest of them followed suit mostly because their Primarchs had become disillusioned with the Emperor and started to side with Horus. As for the timeline, it goes roughly like this: Word Bearers, then the Alpha Legion, followed by the Sons of Horus, Emperor’s Children, Iron Warriors, and laced with the World Eaters and the Death Guard in the mix somewhere. And definitely check out the Horus Heresy series; it’s packed with juicy details about how these legions turned!
Thanks for the breakdown! This stuff is seriously epic. I can’t believe how deep the storytelling goes. I’m quite hooked already and even thinking about starting some model painting! What games do you think are good for beginners like me?
Yeah, I feel you! It can be a bit daunting. I just wanna enjoy the lore, so maybe I will hit the books after settling in with some community favorites.
