After putting the kids to bed, I like to unwind with some NES and SNES games. But lately, I’ve been feeling way too tired for anything that requires thought or challenge. I usually stick to classics like Mario 3 and Kirby, but I’m craving something new that doesn’t have a learning curve. Any recommendations for easygoing retro games for pre-PS1 systems?

Super Mario World is a timeless classic, and Sim City on SNES is great if you just want to build without pressure.
If you’re in the mood for something light, try Burger Time Deluxe or Cave Noire on the Game Boy. Devil’s Crush for the TurboGrafx-16 is also a blast, though maybe not the easiest! Paranormal Pinball is another option that’s fun and laid-back.
Daytona USA and Mario Kart are both solid choices if you’re looking for something that’s competitive but not overly stressful. Plus, Mario Bros. is always a hit!
For easy and entertaining gameplay, check out Jackal or Ninja Spirit on the NES. Mega Man X and TMNT IV: Turtles in Time for the SNES are also perfect picks that don’t require too much focus.
Shinobi III on the Genesis is a pretty smooth ride with controls that feel great. For something simple, you can’t beat Excitebike’s track creator for a casual vibe.
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out is super relaxing for a stroll down memory lane—I’ve memorized the routines! Or you could try the Original NES Contra with the infamous infinite lives code for a trip down nostalgia.
You can’t go wrong with Gun.Smoke or Blazing Lazers if you’re looking to just jump in and have fun. When I need to chill out, I play Kung Fu—it’s a classic for a reason!
Have you tried the GBA Sims games? *The Sims: Bustin’ Out* and *The Urbz: Sims in the City* are super relaxed and have fun stories. Just be cautious with *The Sims 2*—that one’s a bit of a hassle!
