I’m curious about the Buster Sword situation in Rebirth. Why do both Zack and Cloud have one? Didn’t Zack give his sword to Cloud?

So, the story goes that when Zack died protecting Cloud, Cloud took the original Buster Sword. The ending of Remake was a huge twist regarding that whole event—it changes how we view the timeline. Zack’s death is what solidifies the bond between him and Cloud, but now you’ve got these alternate timelines to consider, thanks to Nomura’s complex storytelling.

You find out the answer pretty quickly in the game! It’s actually pretty interesting how the lore connects to the Buster Sword’s origins. Zack leveled up his Buster Sword materia, which created a new one that he handed off to Cloud. So, it’s like a whole cycle of swords, really.
