In Baldur’s Gate, there’s an interesting conversation between characters Bex and Danis where Bex expresses her desire to get a dog, but Danis points out that the city doesn’t allow dogs, although they can have cats. This got me thinking – is there a specific lore reason behind this restriction? And if that’s the case, how do they justify allowing the dog Scratch? It’s a small detail, but I’m really curious about this city rule!

The cats lobbied for it, obviously! 😂 But seriously, I’ve also heard that at some point, dogs were allowed in the city. In fact, the founder of Baldur’s Gate had a pet dog, and you can even find its collar in his house. So, it seems like this rule wasn’t always in place!
There’s actually a law in Baldur’s Gate that bans any animal larger than a peacock from the city. It’s a pretty strange, archaic rule that doesn’t have a clear explanation, much like some real-life laws. In fact, in the “Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus” book, it mentions that some visitors even try to sneak in larger pets by bringing peacocks instead, which has led to a weird peacock-breeding business outside the city! So, while it might seem odd, it’s all part of the city’s quirky history. And as for summoning animals like Scratch, that’s probably just for gameplay convenience!
You know, this could just be the kind of excuse someone gives to avoid getting a dog. Like telling kids that a city doesn’t allow pets just to dodge the extra responsibility! 😂
That’s a good point! It does seem like a balancing act for the game, since having to deal with pet restrictions all the time would be a pain for players.
