I recently found myself in a rough spot. I had a 45k bounty after a guard took me out, and I lost a ton of loot—over 60 items I had nabbed from NPCs! I was planning to use a special item that wipes my bounty, but now I’m hesitant to tackle guards again. Does the crossbow guard use have some randomness to it? Typically, I’d just flee when spotting one, but this dude shot me instantly without a chance to escape. This whole lace adventure started because I needed to feed 50 times as a vampire.

Quick tip for the future: Guards can’t take gold if it’s stashed in the bank. They’ll just kill you, but you keep your bounty after respawning.
Yeah, the more heat you have (like that red bar), the higher the chance you’ll get knocked out in one hit. Honestly, the best way to avoid penalties is to stash all your gold in the bank first!
I had no clue guards could one-shot you! My highest bounty was just 5k. It seems like the more you annoy them, the worse it gets—like if you keep attacking NPCs near them.
From what I’ve experienced, the one-shot usually happens after you’ve been in combat for a while. If a guard targets you, just hightail it! Fighting is usually a bad idea.
