I’m curious about the best methods to play Final Fantasy games 1 through 6 on a handheld device with a backlit screen, like the Game Boy Advance. Are there any options available that work well?

You can definitely emulate the first six games on a GBA, plus there are official ports available in mobile app stores if you prefer that route. Just keep in mind the mobile versions might differ a bit in experience.
I get what you mean about the Switch being too bulky as a handheld. If you’re looking for a portable option, have you considered using your cellphone?
What about the Steam Deck? It’s technically a handheld, but a bit on the larger side. Just curious if it fits your criteria.
Good question! I’d prefer something more compact, though.
So for official versions, you’ve got Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 available for GBA. They may not be the absolute best versions but they do come with some extra content that’s missing in the Pixel Remasters. Plus, don’t forget about Tactics Advance; it’s a nice successor to the original Tactics.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of the oversized ones! A cellphone would definitely feel more convenient.
