Hey everyone! I’m looking to dive into the Horus Heresy series since it seems like a cornerstone of the Warhammer 40k universe. However, I’m wondering if the first four books cover the main events of the series or if they assume a lot of prior knowledge. I don’t think I’ll be able to read every single book, so I want to get a general feel for the story and then cherry-pick the ones that interest me. Does this sound like a solid plan?

If you’re new to Warhammer 40k, diving straight into the Horus Heresy can be overwhelming. It’s pretty lore-heavy and ties into a lot of overarching plot points that you’ll miss if you haven’t read the foundational books first. Plus, with over 54 books in the series, it could become quite a commitment if you don’t have that background. Instead of HH, start with standalone novels or smaller series that introduce various factions and stories. The Eisenhorn Omnibus, again, is highly recommended for starting out! It’s entertaining and helps you understand the backdrop of 40k better.
I hear you! Eisenhorn’s a great way to get the lore without feeling lost. Plus, it’s pretty entertaining!
Honestly, I’d just jump into the Horus Heresy if you’re keen on it! While it’s not the conventional starting point, you might find it exciting as it delves into the darker twists of the story. Just be aware that it’s quite different from the typical 40k vibe initially, but once you get deeper into it, you’ll see the origins of well-known tropes. It’s a journey worth exploring if you don’t mind the complexity!
That’s an interesting take! I guess everyone has their own starting point.
Thanks for the encouragement! I might tackle it alongside some easier reads!
Jumping into the Horus Heresy right off the bat can be a bit tricky! The first few books do set the stage, but they don’t encompass everything important from the series. You might miss a lot of lore since it often leads into other events that are crucial for understanding 40k as a whole. Instead, I’d recommend starting with the Eisenhorn Omnibus. It’s a classic and gives a solid introduction to the 40k universe without all the baggage of prior knowledge. Honestly, it’ll reel you in with its combination of horror, epic battles, and investigation! Plus, there are loads of recommendations for various factions if you’re interested in a specific storyline.
Totally agree with that! Eisenhorn is such a great entry point. It opens up the universe beautifully without assuming you know every detail about the lore.
Sounds like a good recommendation! I might just start with Eisenhorn then. Thanks for the tip!
I appreciate the advice! I do have a decent grasp on the setting already, but I love your recommended approach.
