Hey everyone! I’m totally new to D&D and looking for some advice on class selection for my first playthrough. I’m aiming for a stealthy character who can easily switch between ranged attacks (like bows and crossbows) and melee attacks (like daggers and swords) to ambush my enemies. I initially thought about going with Ranger, but I noticed it’s heavily focused on nature magic and animal companions, which isn’t quite the vibe I’m after.
I have a few questions:
1. How linear are class builds in Baldur’s Gate 3? Is it a bad idea to split between melee and ranged?
2. Can a hybrid build really be strong or effective?
3. Are there any particular classes or subclasses that excel at stealthy, dual-threat combat?
I appreciate any tips or build suggestions you can share!

To get the most out of a stealthy hybrid build, look for weapons with the “finesse” attribute, like daggers and short swords. This lets you use Dexterity for both ranged and melee attacks. If Ranger isn’t your top pick, I’ve got some class suggestions for you:
– **Rogue**: Consider multiclassing with Fighter. The Swashbuckler is great for melee, and the Thief works well for dual-wielding.
– **Gloomstalker Assassin**: Combining the Rogue’s Assassin subclass with Gloomstalker Ranger makes an insane stealth build. Just aim for at least 3 levels in both classes.
– **Fighter**: Pure Fighter offers great attack options and versatility; Battle Master or Arcane Archer subclasses are solid picks for ranged focus.
I had no idea BG3 had so many options! I might have to do multiple runs to try them all out!
