Hey everyone! I’m in the process of building a new gaming PC and it’s been 15 years since my last build. I’ve always gone with AMD and now I’m diving into Linux full time. I’ve dabbled with Linux before and even helped my son set up his Ubuntu machine, which he loves for both gaming and programming.
I’m considering motherboards mainly from Gigabyte, MSI, and maybe ASUS, though I’ve noticed ASUS tends to be pricier. My current Gigabyte board has served me well for over a decade, so I’m leaning that way but I’m curious about the best options right now.
My main concern is driver support for Linux—specifically, do any of these brands perform better or worse in that regard? Is there anything else I need to keep in mind before I make my choice? Thanks in advance!

I recommend going for a motherboard based on the X870E chipset since it utilizes dual AMD chips, which can improve performance. You’ll want to make sure you’re running at least a 6.12 kernel for networking support when using Linux. I currently have an MSI Tomahawk X870E, and I’ve been pleased with its performance running on a 6.14 kernel. Just keep an eye on the chipset details when choosing!
Thanks for the insight! I thought the X870E would be overkill, but I’ll take a closer look at its features. What distro do you recommend for the latest kernel?
