Hey everyone! I’ve taken a break from World of Tanks for about five years due to burnout, but I’m thinking of returning. I used to play from its early beta days and was pretty competitive. What I’m really curious about is, what changes have happened in the game since I last played? I’ve done some reading, but I’m looking for a quick summary of the major updates and changes. Thanks in advance!

A lot has happened since you were away! Generally, the game has stayed similar overall, but there have been significant changes. In 2022, Wargaming split into two companies: Lesta for the Russian side and Wargaming for the rest of the world. Lesta has kept developing content, but Wargaming has focused mainly on adding new premium tanks with extensive monetization. Many players feel the game has become too focused on making money rather than providing fresh content, and a new lootbox system has certainly raised eyebrows. If you’re looking for loads of new content, you might find it a bit underwhelming at first, but it’ll still be familiar after playing for a few days.
You might be in for a shock coming back. It feels a bit like running into a fire with how things are evolving. Hover tanks and laser beams aren’t too far off!
Maps have seen some major revamps, particularly Airfield and Ensk. I was gone during COVID but came back last fall, and I had to relearn the maps! There’s also a bunch of new tanks out there—British double-barrel heavies, Polish TDs, and some rocket-boosted Chinese tanks to name a few. While monetization is ramped up, you can still grab decent stuff for free through the Battle Pass and Twitch drops. Make sure to take advantage of the returning player perks and grind some credits!
Honestly, jumping back in now feels a bit like playing roulette. You spend money for a chance to get tanks and boxes, which might lead to even better tanks. It’s turned pretty crazy with the monetization.
