I’m looking for recommendations on a better introduction to the Warhammer 40K universe than the “Gods of Mars” trilogy. I’ve read the anthology of short stories from the agents of the Inquisition, but I’m hoping there’s something else out there that really encompasses the vast scope of 40K lore. I’d love to hear if anyone has other suggestions!

Honestly, I’ve got to say that the *Gods of Mars* trilogy is still the best entry point for getting into the setting, and I stand by that with no competition.
If you haven’t checked out *Vaults of Terra*, you should. It provides an insightful introduction. And then there’s the *Watchers of the Throne* series that, when read together, really capture a lot of the important facets of 40K lore.
The rulebooks for the main 40K game or some of the spin-off games would give you a more complete overview. The “Gods of Mars” series gives a decent slice of the martial Imperial groups, but it doesn’t really cover other factions well enough.
Keep in mind that with dozens of factions and cultures in 40K, one series will never give you the full picture. While I love the *Gods of Mars* for its multiple viewpoints and great characters, it doesn’t encompass all the lore. You might want to explore multiple sources to get a bigger picture!
