I’m on the lookout for a co-op game that I can play with someone important to me. Things haven’t been going too well lately, so I’m hoping for something enjoyable that can help us connect and make some good memories together. This friend of mine just finished The Last of Us and Dying Light 2, both of which he loved.
I know there are tons of campaign games like Halo, Call of Duty, or Left for Dead, but what I really want is a game that feels more like a journey where we can work together towards a common goal. I checked out The Forest, but it’s a bit older and the opening can be a little scary for me, though I’m still considering it. Sons of The Forest looks newer but I’m unsure.
I’m torn between more open-ended games that have a ton of side activities to do and build or a linear story-driven game where two characters progress like in It Takes Two, which I’ve played but he hasn’t. While there are various campaign options like REPO or that cooking game (which I can’t remember the name of right now), I’m really after a title that offers a strong narrative and gives us that journey experience together. Any suggestions would be awesome!

Don’t forget about A Way Out! It’s specifically designed for two players and has a great story that unfolds as you play, so it feels like a complete journey.
If you want something a bit like The Forest but not as scary, try Grounded! You can set it up to reduce the spooky elements, like making spiders look cartoonish. It’s a unique experience and super fun in co-op.
I’d definitely recommend using Split Fiction, especially if you’re already familiar with It Takes Two. It keeps that engaging story and teamwork feel alive, which sounds like what you’re looking for! Plus, there are some hilarious moments along the way!
Have you thought about Portal 2? It’s a fantastic co-op game that really emphasizes teamwork with its puzzles. My girlfriend and I had a blast with it, and the humor is just perfect. Plus, it feels like you’re on this wild journey trying to escape quirky test chambers together. It’s both humorous and challenging, making it a total bonding experience!
If you liked It Takes Two, you might love the new game from the same studio, Split Fiction. It came out recently and has a similar vibe, making it perfect for co-op play. My wife and I enjoyed it together over a week; it’s a really touching journey.
For sure! I think It Takes Two has the edge, but Split Fiction is still awesome. The story really pulls you in!
If you’re up for something a bit challenging, I suggest giving Outward a shot. It really feels like a great adventure when you play co-op. You have to manage survival skills like eating and sleeping while fighting off enemies. Spent tons of hours having fun and bonding with my brother!
Thanks for the suggestion! Is Baldur’s Gate 3 similar? I thought it might be more of a board game style? Just curious!
