I’m curious about the classification of Hydreigon. There are various types of dragons out there, like Lindworms and Wyverns. Given that Hydreigon has three heads, I initially thought it was a hydra, but it only has two limbs, which makes me think of a Lindworm. However, Lindworms typically have just one head. Plus, I’m not sure if those things on its back should be called wings. What do you think? How does Hydreigon fit into these dragon categories?

It’s a cool creature, no doubt! I think it falls somewhere around a Panzer style dragon.
I’d probably classify Hydreigon as either a Hydragon or a Wyvern within D&D terms. It’s hard to pin down a specific type with all the variations out there!
Yeah, dragon classifications can get pretty confusing! The differences like “dragon vs wyvern” are mostly tied to specific fictional contexts, like in D&D. In reality, what defines a dragon is pretty arbitrary based on various mythologies.
You might want to think about the Zmei Gorynych, a Slavic dragon that has four limbs, a pair of wings, and three heads. It definitely has some similarities with Hydreigon. I guess you could say it’s like a dragon version of Hydreigon without the whole Pokémon name twist!
Now I see where King Ghidorah gets its vibes from!
Well, the name itself is a giveaway. If Game Freak calls it a hydra, then that kind of seals the deal for me! Though, I do get the confusion since its features don’t fully match the typical hydra description.
Totally! Zmei Gorynych is a perfect comparison. Plus, there’s a bit of inspiration from Yamata No Orochi in the mix too. It seems like Hydreigon takes hints from various dragon lore.
