I’m looking to create a tabletop RPG campaign set in the Monster Hunter universe, but I’m struggling to decide on the best system to use. I know about Amellwind’s Guide for D&D 5E, which captures a lot of the spirit, but I’m aiming for something more grounded. The spells in Amellwind might complicate things too much for what I want. I’d love any suggestions or ideas on systems that would work well for a Monster Hunter-style experience!

Wilderfeast could work for you! It flips the Monster Hunter concept on its head by giving you abilities through cooking and eating monsters instead of just crafting gear. It adds a unique twist while still keeping the spirit of monster hunting!
You might want to consider using Mythras. It’s got a really grounded approach and emphasizes tactical combat—like tripping or disarming enemies. If you don’t handle things well, the fights can turn deadly quickly! They even have Combat Modules to help players learn effective strategies to take down big monsters.
There are some board games out there based on Monster Hunter that might inspire you for your TTRPG. Also, Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting is another D&D 5E supplement like Amellwind. Some people also mention Vasen has elements similar to the Witcher series for monster hunting, but I’ve never played it myself.
Pathfinder 2E has a supplement called Battlezoo Bestiary that offers an interesting gear upgrade mechanic that works with existing monsters. It could definitely add depth to your campaign!
What specific aspects of Monster Hunter are you hoping to replicate? Things like crafting gear from monsters, monster resistances, and status effects? If you’re looking at crafting, a little homebrewing could go a long way. Runequest has solid combat mechanics that could fit well. If you prefer something simpler, The One Ring has a unique stance system for combat that might capture the group dynamic against single monsters.
