I’ve got this computer that I’m pretty fond of, but I’ve hit a snag. It’s starting to overheat during gaming sessions, and I think it just needs some thermal paste reapplied or maybe some other thermal components replaced. The real kicker is that my CPU is too outdated to run Windows 11—it’s only about 8 years old! My motherboard, a LENOVO 364A, may not support any CPUs that meet Win 11 requirements either. I like Windows and feel comfortable using it, but I’m reluctant to go through the hassle of replacing a motherboard and CPU just for another 5 years of support before the next hardware demand pops up.
Here are my specs for reference:
– Intel Core i7 6700
– 16GB DDR4
– Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080
I know a lot of folks are all about the latest and greatest, but my rig isn’t totally obsolete. I’m considering freshening up the thermals and potentially switching to a different OS or maybe even selling my PC for parts. A friend of mine repurposed his into a media center with Plex. So, I’m curious—what do you all think I should do?

Hey, I get where you’re coming from. I’ve got a buddy with a similar setup (i7 6700 and a 2070 Super), and he’s still rocking it just fine on Windows 10. Honestly, I’d say just keep using Windows 10 for now. It’s not going to vanish overnight!
True, but they’ve stopped supporting Windows 10, so no more security updates. I made a thumb drive with Win 10 just in case mine acts up.
