Hey everyone! I checked if I could upgrade to Windows 11, and the app said my CPU isn’t supported. I’m worried about what will happen to my current setup when they move to Windows 11. Can I still use my PC, or will I need to upgrade my hardware? Also, what’s the criteria for a CPU to be compatible with Windows 11, and what’s the cheapest and easiest upgrade option? My setup includes an Intel i7-6700K, Asus Z170-A motherboard, and a GTX 1650. I was planning to upgrade my GPU next, but if Windows 11 is going to make my PC unusable, I guess I’m stuck with the current one.

For Windows 11, Intel’s 8th gen CPUs are generally the minimum requirement, while AMD’s Zen+ CPUs are compatible too. You could attempt an unsupported upgrade to Windows 11, but that might complicate future updates. As for Windows 10, it will continue to work after the support ends, but you’ll lose security updates. Your browser and other software will still receive updates initially, so your risk isn’t immediate. If you want to stay cozy with Windows, consider the extended support option, but it can get pricey after the first year. And hey, there’s always Linux if you’re feeling adventurous!
Unfortunately, your CPU isn’t supported for Windows 11. Here are a few options:
1. You can install Windows 10 LTSC IoT 2021, which will be supported until 2032.
2. Bypass the requirements and install Windows 11, but this might limit you to a specific version.
3. Stick with Windows 10 for now, as it won’t stop working right away.
4. Consider switching to Linux as an alternative.
Most of these options will require a fresh install, or you could choose to upgrade your CPU altogether. If you want to avoid an upgrade for now, I recommend trying the LTSC IoT 2021 version!
Even after Windows 10 support ends, you can still use it. The main risk is potential security issues down the line, maybe five years from now when older software may not run. If you’re looking to upgrade, it might be better to get a completely new PC since your motherboard limits upgrades. What’s your budget for new hardware?
I hadn’t even heard of LTSC IoT 2021 before! Thanks for the tip, I’ll give that a shot!
