I have climbed to the top of the monument and there are 9 big buttons and another to reset. What order are you meant to press these in? How do I even find it out?

If you are talking about the starting area of the game then you need to look off into the distance at what looks like a graveyard. You will see that 3 of the 9 squares over there are a lighter gray. Press all of the buttons on top of the monument that are not light gray in the distance and it will activate the monument for you.
