Hey all! I hope you’re having a great day. I recently finished playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and I absolutely loved it! Now I’m on the lookout for my next JRPG obsession. I primarily game on PC and PS5, but I also have a Switch.
I’ve been around the JRPG scene for a while and have played most notable titles. I’ve dabbled in all of the main Final Fantasy games, many spin-offs, the Mana series, and Dragon Quest entries. The Tales series has been a favorite as well. I’m especially fond of the Bravely Default games for their unique combat, although Octopath Traveler didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I’m also keen on strategy RPGs like FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Triangle Strategy.
Currently, I’m trying out DQ11 and Edge of Eternity but haven’t been as captivated as I was with Clair Obscur. I’m looking to steer clear of games that focus heavily on relationship mechanics, as I didn’t enjoy those aspects in games like Persona. Additionally, I’d prefer a story that deviates from the typical “young adventurers on a quest to slay a god.”
What I want are games with rich lore, unique world-building, a story that deeply resonates with me, and characters that I’ll truly care about. Here’s my wishlist for reference: Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Romancing SaGa 2, LUNAR Remastered collection, Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster, and Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne. Please share any recommendations that might not be on my list!

Definitely check out the Xenoblade series! They’re known for immersive stories and may just consume your free time completely. Just a heads up, start with the mainline games instead of Xenoblade X for a smoother introduction.
Have you thought about trying Yakuza: Like a Dragon? It’s not the typical fantasy setting, but it has a rich story and unique job classes with an adult cast. Plus, it balances emotional moments with some very quirky side content.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I’ll definitely consider these titles as I search for my next JRPG fix!
For emotional storytelling, I highly suggest Astlibra Revision. It has intense moments that pull at your heartstrings, and it’s getting rave reviews on Steam! Think of it as a hidden gem that might surprise you with its depth.
If you’re open to action gameplay, the NieR games should be on your radar. They’re highly unique and offer something special in terms of narrative and emotional engagement. Most folks recommend starting with Automata, but Replicant has its own charm too.
I’m revisiting the first NieR on my PS3—thinking about playing them in chronological order; what do you think?
Chained Echoes and the entire Trails series are worth checking out too! Chained Echoes has an awesome battle system, though the characters might not resonate as much for some. The Trails series does require a time investment but the character development is quite rewarding.
Do you know which systems the Trails games are available on?
Absolutely agree! Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has a similar vibe to Clair Obscur, so you might find it engaging.
