Hey everyone! I’m curious to know if there are any JRPGs out there that feature strong mystery elements similar to what we see in the Xeno games, like Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade Chronicles. I’m really drawn to games that weave an overarching mystery into their narratives, with subtle foreshadowing that hints at the truth without making it too obvious. It’s such a thrill to catch those details on a second playthrough, just like with the character Id in Xenogears, where a lot of the story tidbits become clearer later on.
While I appreciate a good mystery, I’m not saying it needs to be the main focus of the plot; I just love when it has a strong presence throughout the game. I’m mainly looking for recommendations on Switch or PC (Steam), but I’m open to hearing about options from other platforms too. What JRPGs do you think capture this sense of intrigue and mystery?

Have you tried **Expedition 33**? Tons of mystery packed in there, and while it wasn’t made in Japan, it feels very much like a JRPG.
You might also want to look into the **NieR** series, especially **NieR: Automata** and **Drakengard**. They have some strong narrative elements and mystery, although be prepared for some repetitive mechanics that might not sit well with some players.
Check out **13 Sentinels**! It’s got a sci-fi vibe similar to the Xeno games, and the mysteries unfold in a really engaging way throughout, though fair warning: it does have a lot of cutscenes. If you’re okay with that, it might be right up your alley!
Interesting! As long as the cutscenes are good, I’m here for it. I usually enjoy sci-fi settings for mysteries.
For a solid mix of mystery, give **Persona 4** a shot. It’s got a murder mystery feel that keeps you guessing throughout.
I’d say games like **Chrono Cross** and **Nier** especially deliver in the mystery department. But honestly, I still feel **Xenogears** holds a special place that few can top.
**Last Bible III** and **Radiant Historia** are two old gems that do a great job with mystery elements as well!
It’s not just cutscenes! It’s more like a mix of 1/3 battles, 1/3 exploration, and 1/3 cutscenes.
