Hey everyone! I’ve got a question that revolves around JRPGs with a strong mystery element similar to the Xeno series, which includes games like Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade Chronicles. What I’m on the hunt for are games that feature a compelling narrative with subtle but clever foreshadowing. I’m not necessarily looking for games where the mystery is the main focus, but rather those that weave it throughout the story, keeping players guessing until the big reveals. For example, the mystery surrounding the character Id in Xenogears unfolds gradually, with layers of detail that might not click until you play through again. I’m curious if there are other JRPGs that maintain this atmosphere of intrigue without making it the central plot point. I prefer games available on Switch or PC (Steam is my go-to), but I’m open to hearing about others too. Any recommendations?

How about the original *Shadow Hearts*? It has a lot of intriguing mystery elements, and the sequels keep the mystery alive as well. It could scratch that itch you’re looking for!
You might want to check out *Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society*. It really keeps you guessing about what’s going on for a long time, and the atmosphere adds to the whole mystery vibe!
*Final Fantasy X* is another classic with some solid mystery aspects tied around the characters of Tidus and Yuna. You might find the layers in their backstory quite engaging!
Have you tried the *NieR* games? They’re known for having deep narratives and a lot of mystery woven into the story. Or, if you’re up for something different, *Clair Obscure: Expedition 33* has gotten a lot of buzz for its mysterious elements too!
For sure, but just a bit cautious because of how *Automata* handled its routes. Interested to see how *Expedition 33* compares!
You should definitely check out *13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim*. It has a sci-fi vibe and unravels mysterious elements as you progress. Just a heads up, it has a lot of cutscenes—like, a lot—but they’re engaging enough to keep you invested throughout the story!
It’s not actually 80% cutscenes though; I’d say it’s more evenly split between battles, exploration, and cutscenes. Don’t let that deter you from trying it out!
I’m really interested now! If the cutscenes are well done and the story is intriguing, I could totally get into it. Sci-fi isn’t a must for me, but it’s a great fit for uncovering mysteries.
Yeah, I played *NieR: Automata* a bit, but the trick of multiple playthroughs made it feel a bit repetitive for me. I’m curious about *Replicant*, though!
