I’m trying to figure out how to make the most of Marius’ ability since it’s an active one. I know loot has visual cues, audio signals, a HUD chevron, and a minimap mark, but I want to understand specifically how Marius helps in spotting treasure. What should I be using this ability for, especially when it requires me to already notice loot nearby?

Definitely helps to find things that you might miss, especially if you prefer to have the visual and audio indicators turned off. If you’re like me and dislike using the minimap, Marius can be a solid choice to navigate and locate treasures.
Marius’ ability is great for detecting not just loot, but also enemies and traps in your vicinity. While some may argue other characters have more essential skills, Marius can definitely highlight loot through walls, which comes in handy when those indicators are lacking or hard to notice.
