I’m just wondering how things might play out if we ever had the chance to align ourselves outside of the usual Alliance and Horde factions. Although I doubt we’ll ever see a true ‘neutral’ faction in the game, I’m curious to hear your thoughts on how such a system could work.

It actually worked on EverQuest 2’s PvP servers! There was a third faction that existed, and they had a really unique setup. Just throwing that out there as an idea.
Honestly, it wouldn’t be that crazy of an idea in today’s game. The biggest hurdle would be dealing with all the legacy content that’s built around the Alliance/Horde divide. A lot of quests and raids depend on your faction. They might need to create a neutral city—maybe even use an old capital—and then keep newer content faction-agnostic. The real issue, though, is that factions don’t mean as much anymore, so making a neutral one might not be worth it.
There was actually a mention in the original game manual that hinted at the possibility of players defecting from their factions and becoming outlaws. You could lose reputation and maybe even earn it back later! Although that never really made it into the game, we did get the concept of ‘dishonorable kills’ instead, and the faction system stayed pretty much unchanged.
Kind of feels like we’re already in that zone, doesn’t it? Major characters from both factions refer to us as their ‘champion’ even when we’re not exactly loyal to either side.
