In the Brotherhood of Steel quest, you find out Paladin Danse is a synth. If youre conflicted about following Maxsons orders to kill him or sparing him, heres what to expect from both choices.

If you spare him and successfully convince Maxson, Danse remains available as a companion with the added bonus of some unique dialog down the line. The downside is it strains your relationship with the Brotherhood, but it opens up more story depth and role-playing opportunities. For those who like more character-driven narratives, sparing can be rewarding in its own way.
If you spare Danse, he can stay as your buddy. You can let him hide instead of killing him. Maxson won’t be happy, but you can talk him into letting Danse live if you’re good at persuading. No rewards right away, but you get to keep Danse around.
Its all about what youre going for in your playthrough. If you want to stay on the Brotherhoods path, follow the order even though it might not feel great. Sparing him lets you keep your options open and maintain a diverse group of allies.
If you kill Danse, you pretty much stay in Elder Maxsons good graces and youre aligning with the Brotherhoods strict anti-synth stance. Youll lose Danse as a companion though, which might be a big deal depending on how much you like having him around. Completing it this way also gives you full support from the Brotherhood, so its the way to go if youre fully committed to their cause.
