I’m hunting for some fun multiplayer games that are perfect for playing on handheld devices. I’ve really enjoyed the likes of Mario Kart, Pokémon Unite, and Heartwood Online in the past. I’m open to all genres and budget isn’t a problem. I would rather not have any 3D third-person or first-person games, as they don’t seem to play well on handhelds for me. I’m looking for something that feels comfy and is built for handheld controllers. Any suggestions?

If you’re into fighting games, consider trying Tekken. They play surprisingly well on handhelds and offer a satisfying multiplayer experience.
Although you mentioned avoiding 3D games, I find that Souls games and Elden Ring play excellently with a controller, and the online functionality is solid, from what I’ve heard.
Broforce is another title you may want to check out, especially if you’re into the side-scrolling action type of vibe.
Risk of Rain Returns is a fantastic choice. It’s got a great mix of action and cooperative play that seems to work really well on handheld systems.
Vampire Survivors is a cool little game that’s perfect for killing some time on your handheld. Give it a shot!
You might like Ultimate Chicken Horse. It’s got crossplay too, which is always a plus. I think you’ll really get a kick out of it on a handheld.
Are you open to co-op games? If so, I’d recommend Vagante and Ship of Fools. Overcooked and Moving Out are also a blast if you’re playing with friends. Gigabash is popular, but I haven’t had the chance to try it yet.
Rocket League is another awesome option. It’s super engaging and feels pretty natural on a handheld controller.
