What games can run smoothly on an Intel i3-6300U with Linux?

-

I’ve got an older laptop with an Intel i3-6300U, 8GB DDR4 RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It was slowing down on Windows, so I switched it to Linux. I’m curious about what kind of games I can play on this setup. Mainly looking for 2D games similar to Hollow Knight or Katana Zero. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Your machine might handle games like Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Dead Island, or even Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor on 720p and low settings. They worked decently on an Intel HD Graphics 4600, and your HD 520 should do even better. Plus, with proper Vulkan support, you might see a boost in performance.

Consider going retro with XP and Vista era games. GOG has a good selection of oldies but goodies that run fine on lower specs. You might even try GTA V on low settings, though that’s hit or miss. Games like L4D and TF2 could also be fun. Emulation and indie 2D games will probably run well.

Factorio is a brilliant option! It’s super scalable, running well on low-end to high-end rigs. You could also try Creeper World 3; just adjust the graphics settings to keep it smooth. Both run reliably on Linux.

You can definitely enjoy a bunch of side-scroller and pixel-art games. Not sure about heavy titles, but you might get away with playing WoW Classic or Minecraft on low settings. Older game emulations should work nicely too. Don’t forget about the option of cloud gaming if your internet is solid.

Space Station 14 could be an interesting choice for you. It’s not too demanding, and it runs on Linux smoothly. Perfect fit if you’re into that kinda gameplay.
