I’ve got a couple of games in mind that I wanted to fully enjoy, but they were pretty much ruined for me because they required an always-online connection: Godfall and Outriders. Both of these games were really fun, and I had a good time playing them, but I had just become a dad and didn’t have the luxury to commit to games that I couldn’t pause. If they didn’t insist on being online all the time, I might still be diving into them now or at least feel eager to play them again. What about you? What games have you had a similar experience with, where they were spoiled by one annoying gimmick or poor design choice?

The Last of Us Part 2 had a really engaging storyline, but there was a point in the game that frustrated me so much that I just couldn’t continue. I feel like some story choices totally turned me off from what could have otherwise been an amazing experience.
I really wanted to love Atomic Heart because of the unique world and atmosphere, but man, the protagonist just felt like a total jerk. That really took me out of the experience. The voice acting wasn’t great either, in any language.
Preach! I could have dealt with some issues if the main character had been more relatable or less of a tool.
For me, it was BioMutant. The visuals were vibrant and the characters had personality, but the combat was just terrible. It felt unresponsive and clunky, which was a bummer because I wanted to love that game so much.
For me, it’s definitely Breath of the Wild. I loved the game, but the weapon durability issue turned me off from replaying it. It felt tedious having to constantly break weapons after only a few encounters. It’s like you can’t enjoy a good battle without your good weapons crumbling.
Totally agree! It was even more frustrating in the beginning since you’re just trying to clear out camps. I felt like I had to hoard my good weapons for the tougher foes, and that just isn’t fun. I get the idea behind it, but they went too far.
I hear you! It was improved in Tears of the Kingdom, but the durability was still a bit rough. I wish they could have figured out a way to let you repair *some* weapons.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has amazing visuals and storyline, but playing it was so tedious. The slow pacing, long animations, and all those cutscenes made it feel more like a chore than gameplay. It was beautiful, but not exactly fun in the traditional sense.
Right? I kept trying to get into it but those slow mechanics just wore me down.
I felt the same! I was so eager to see what happened next, but the pacing made it a struggle.
Yep, that protagonist was super annoying! Kind of made it hard to connect with the story when you didn’t like the lead.
