I recently started adding decals to my Warhammer models and I’m really curious about the meanings behind the various heraldry symbols. Specifically, I’d love to know what each symbol indicates. Also, could someone clarify the distinctions between battleline units, close support, and fire support? I have a grip on veteran and command symbols, but the rest is a bit murky for me.

The meaning of heraldry symbols can vary between different chapters, but generally, here’s how they break down:
– Arrow = battleline unit
– Crossed arrows = assault or fast attack
– Chevron = fire support
– Crux = veteran status
– Skull = command unit
For chapters that follow the Ultramarine structure, you’ll usually see squad numbers displayed over these symbols. The color of the pauldron trim typically indicates the company as well. Most other symbols are usually just decorations or campaign badges.
Thanks for the breakdown! I’m working on some Raven Guard models and they follow the codex too. But can you explain the actual differences between battleline, assault, and fire support? Is it about their roles or the types of gear they have?
