I’m curious about what will happen if I play games like Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch 2 without buying the upgrade. Will these games be playable? How will the resolution and frame rate be affected?

You’ll still be able to play just fine, though textures and HDR won’t be improved. So, expect frame rates to still cap out at 30 unless altered by updates or patches.
A lot of us have been speculating! Personally, I plan to test the new system with a couple of games before jumping in on the upgrade. If there’s a noticeable difference in how they play, I might consider it. But if not, I won’t stress too much since it’s only about $10!
That’s a smart plan! Testing it out first seems like the best way to go.
You’ll be able to play your games just like you did on the original Switch. The performance might be slightly more stable if the game had issues before, but you shouldn’t expect any improvements in frame rate or resolution. It’ll run at the same specs as before!
It’s likely that games using dynamic resolution will do a bit better with the new hardware, but overall, don’t count on any major changes.
If you’re thinking about going in without upgrading, remember it plays just like the original. Expect things like frame rate to be stuck at 30 and lower resolutions still.
Essentially, the frame rates and resolutions will remain the same; however, they might be more stable. Plus, you might experience faster load times!
Yeah, games with dynamic scaling might look better, but otherwise it’s pretty consistent with what you’ve had.
Right, while the FPS won’t get better, at least you’ll avoid some of the previous stuttering!
