I’ve been thinking about whether classes are really necessary in the Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). It feels like the class system adds redundancy on top of the existing role system, and it could be cool if we had access to all skill lines. Wouldn’t that be more in line with the Elder Scrolls series? Also, I’ve heard suggestions about possibly adding a custom class that allows players to choose any three skill lines from any class instead of removing them entirely. What do you all think about these ideas?

As a solo fan of the Elder Scrolls, I think the idea of removing classes seems appealing. However, the general consensus in MMORPGs is that people really love their classes. Removing them might lead to nightmare balance issues, which are already tricky to manage. I do agree we need more non-class skill trees, though!
But isn’t balance a bit of a misconception? If everyone had access to everything, wouldn’t that actually create a better balance?
