Hey everyone! Just had my first session back in the game since like season 3 or 4, and I encountered the Ancient Redmaw for the first time. Wow, it’s like fighting a volcano! I made a rookie mistake by not equipping the Harpoon gun, which led us to sink after our ship flipped away. I’m a bit rusty, but I’d love any tips you have on fighting the Redmaw, and I’m also curious about the new hunter’s call stuff and how to use the new weapons effectively. I’m mainly focused on taking down that Meg again!

Just like any other Megalodon, keep shooting! The Redmaw is just stronger and has a fiery twist to it. If you’re still looking for strategies, I found it easier to anchor and fight. But that’s just me—gotta keep an eye on your sails, right?
To make things easier, it helps to stop your ship completely so it won’t shake around. After that, just focus on fire and hole management. If you can manage that, you’ll take the Redmaw down in no time! Also, are you considering dropping anchor or just hoisting sails?
Before diving into the fight, buy some meat from the shipwright and cook it up. The overheal will really help during repairs or bailing since you can keep going without risking fire damage. And remember to grab onto the wheel or cannon just before it bites—super important!
I’ve tried timing that, but it can be tricky. Still, it worked out for me once when I was able to grab the ladder!
Redmaw moves fast, so if you’re on a bigger ship, I’d recommend anchoring. Always keep those cannons loaded! If it charges, scatter to avoid its final bite. If you’ve got a buddy, have them use a flintlock for constant hits. This helps minimize the explosive buildup too. And don’t forget your grapple gun—perfect for getting teammates back on board if they fall off.
Hunting spears are your best friend! A hit with one will stop its charge immediately, even just throwing it by hand. Just keep in mind the longer the fight goes, the hotter the Redmaw gets. When you hear it growl like a kettle, be ready—it’s about to explode! Keeping your damage consistent slows down its heat buildup.
Wait, you can use hunting spears on the Megs? I thought they were just for animals! Thanks for the tip about the heating; I was confused when it happened.
I’m wondering the same! Anchoring seems like it could help.
