I got the stick after giving the banana to the monkey. A stick seems like a bit of a crap item considering the area is full of trees that also have sticks. None the less, its in my inventory now and I have no idea what I am meant to be doing with it. Who do you trade the stick with?

Head back to Ukuku Prairie. If you are coming from Mabe village and coming into the prairie keep going to the right and you will come across a man who is standing next to a tree with a beehive in it. Talk to him and he will take the stick from you and use it to knock the hive out of the tree. You will get the honeycomb as a result from this.
