Hey everyone! I just kicked off a new character and I’m super excited to dive into using power armor and heavy guns. I’m wondering, what heavy guns are considered the best in the game right now? Also, I heard I’ll need to gather a lot of gold bullion if I want to get my hands on the T-65 power armor, is that true? Any advice would be appreciated!

T-65 is a solid all-rounder, but I’d recommend you get the Union PA blueprints from Expeditions first—they’re super useful for new players since they provide great poison mitigation and carry weight bonuses. For heavy guns, I’d suggest going for a .50 HMG and a Plasma Caster to start, and then explore other options later. The Plasma Gatling is a popular choice too, but getting all the right mods is a long grind.
Definitely check out the Gatling Plasma; it is one of the best heavy weapons, provided you can keep your cores stocked up. The Plasma Caster and Gatling Gun are both good alternatives, especially since they can generate ammo if you’re not raiding.
When it comes to power armor, it really depends on what bonus works best for your playstyle. I personally prefer the Excavator power armor since I like to carry multiple heavy guns. For heavy guns, I’d say all of them are solid choices, especially if you mod them right to reduce weapon and ammo weight. With that setup, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle any challenge out there.
If you’re aiming for a specific build, the Vulcan power armor from raids is a great choice for an AP-focused playstyle. When it comes to heavy guns, most players I see swear by the Gatling Plasma. Personally, I rotate between a Gatling Plasma, a .50 cal MG, and a Plasma Caster for big damage. The Gauss Minigun is also excellent if you really want to specialize in heavy firepower.
Don’t overlook the Pepper Shaker! It’s a beast—I’ve had it hitting for over 1,000 damage on critical points. More than my fully upgraded Gatling Plasma, trust me, it’s worth using.
Interesting! I’m looking to try a non-VATS build this time; do you think that’s viable?
