Hey everyone! I just jumped into FF14 and I’m curious about the jobs or classes of the main protagonists from previous Final Fantasy titles. I know they won’t always match one-to-one, but here are some I thought of:
– Clive: Dark Knight
– Jon from FF14: All jobs (depends on the player)
– Lightning: Gunbreaker
– Zidane: Thief
– Squall: Gunbreaker
– Cloud: Dark Knight or Paladin
Do you guys agree with my picks? What can you suggest for the others I might be missing? Thanks in advance!

I think if we’re talking weapon styles from FF14, some of these connections make sense. Zidane’s a clear Thief, and in XVI, Barnabas really evokes the Dark Knight vibes instead of Clive. In XII, you get a lot of flexibility, but it seems like Vaan fits Shikari best, Balthier with Machinist, and Fran as an Archer. The varying job systems really muddle things up across titles, though—like XIII’s roles don’t line up at all!
Cecil from IV is a classic example of switching roles—starting as a Dark Knight and moving to Paladin. As for Terra in VI, she’s pretty much a Black Mage/Summoner. Locke is definitely a Thief (we’re not telling him though!), while Celes can fit both Red Mage and Warrior. Don’t forget in Record Keeper, they assigned classes based on the characters’ in-game stats, which adds another layer!
I’ve got some thoughts on Clive. I wouldn’t actually call him a Dark Knight since he doesn’t sacrifice HP for damage. He kind of channels eikons instead of summoning them, so I’d lean towards Mystic Knight or Spellblade for him. As for XVI, honestly, it feels more like Nero from DMC than a classic FF character. With XV, the jobs are a bit jumbled too. For VII, VIII, and XII, it gets tricky to assign jobs, but I think we can agree Tifa and Zell stick to their monk roles pretty clearly!
For sure! I think VIII is easier than it seems. Like, Squall is a Knight with that recurring theme, while others fit pretty nicely too.
Totally agree! And in FF3, the protagonists are all over the place job-wise, especially with the Onion Knight and Luneth. Job classifications can really depend on how each game handles it.
